About My Language Journey
I pretty much grew up with the internet, and through gaming, I met people from all over the world, especially when I was playing a lot of League of Legends. I’d say about 80% of the friends I made were outside the US. As a kid, it was mind-blowing to realize I could connect with someone across the globe with just a few taps on my keyboard.
We’d chat about our cultures, our daily lives, and how different things were living in other parts of the world. That curiosity and connection fascinated me, it showed me how diverse life really is.
For a while, though, I hit a low point. My routine became just waking up, gaming, then going to bed. This went on for years, and I realized I was stuck, without direction. That’s when I took a step back and started looking for something meaningful I could do at home, something to grow myself.
Learning languages became my first real project. It was something I could do independently, at my own pace, right from my room.
Then I discovered a polyglot on YouTube, laoshu505000. He would go out into his city and talk to people in the languages he was learning. What struck me wasn’t just his fluency, it was the smiles and warmth he brought out by simply making the effort to speak someone’s language. That small gesture of respect and curiosity about another culture was powerful.
That experience clicked with me. I realized learning languages wasn’t just about grammar or vocabulary, it was about connecting, understanding others, and sharing a little joy through something as simple as speaking their language.
Below, you’ll find weekly updates tracking my progress in each language I’m learning. I use a ranking system to help me visualize my journey; both for myself and for anyone interested in following along.
I’m still refining this system, so I’m not ready to share the full details just yet. But eventually, I’ll have a dedicated page explaining the system and the mindset behind it.
I created this ranking because I tried many popular apps and resources recommended on Reddit and forums, but they never fully clicked for me across all the languages I want to learn. I needed something tailored, a way to measure progress that felt real and motivating.
Below are all glossaries to my weekly progress updates on every language that I’m learning. I have short clips of me speaking the language or an update of where I’m at. A little reflection of how my week went, notes, as well as my test results if I took a test that week.
I will also have some grammar pages talking teaching some grammar points that I learned for certain languages. I’m not an expert, nor do I have any certificates to prove that I’m proficient or fluent in any language, so feel free to fact check me on things!
