🎥 Speaking French:

🧾 Intro / Reflection

Passed Silver 1! Honestly, this rank was easier than I expected. Side note: this is about where I was before with French back when I was using apps, before restarting with my own structure from the ground up.
This week’s focus was on past events, time markers, and sequence words, with past tense being the main challenge. Fortunately, past tense in French isn’t too hard, so I didn’t need to cram much. Instead, I just practiced conversations.
One thing I noticed: I should probably make my French tests harder or at least add more questions. They feel lighter than my other languages. Mistakes this time were small, mostly forgetting accent marks when spelling, since I’m more focused on speaking than writing. Still, something to work on.
As always, still stacking Beermoney earnings to make money online while studying. Every little bit adds up, and it’s nice to monetize the process. 👇

💸 Earn While You Learn
I like to stack beermoney while I study languages, most of these apps are super low-effort and just give me a nice bonus on top of learning. It’s not job-replacement money, but it adds up, especially since I’ve become more introverted. 👇

Grammar requirements:

Le Passé Composé

Form

Subject + auxiliary verb (avoir/être) + past participle

  • Most verbs use avoir: j’ai parlé (I spoke), nous avons mangé (we ate)
  • Some verbs use être: movement verbs (aller, venir, arriver, partir…) and all reflexive verbs.
e.g. Je suis allé(e) (I went), Elle s’est réveillée (She woke up)

Être verbs must agree in gender & number:

  • Elle est allée (feminine singular)
  • Ils sont allés (masculine plural)
  • Elles sont allées (feminine plural)

Step B: Make the past participle

Regular verbs:

  • -er → -é : parler → parlé (j’ai parlé)
  • -ir → -i : finir → fini (il a fini)
  • -re → -u : vendre → vendu (nous avons vendu)

Common irregulars:

InfinitivePast participle
avoireu
êtreété
fairefait
prendrepris
boirebu
lirelu
mettremis
voirvu
venirvenu* (uses être)
allerallé* (uses être)
diredit

vouloirvoulu

2. Time Markers (Repères de temps)

These place events in time.

Past references:

  • hier = yesterday
  • avant-hier = the day before yesterday
  • la semaine dernière = last week
  • le mois dernier = last month
  • l’année dernière = last year
  • il y a deux jours = two days ago
  • ce matin = this morning

Sequencing:

  • d’abord = first
  • ensuite / puis = then
  • après / après ça = after / after that
  • finalement / enfin = finally

Silver French Test Results

Prompt 1:

Tell me about what you did yesterday. Use at least three actions, in the past tense, with sequencing words like d’abord, ensuite, après, enfin.

hier, d’abord j’ai mangè le petit dejeurner, apres je suis allè au cafe.
ensuite je suis allè au magasin et j’ai achetè du legumes et du pollet.
enfin je suis rentrè a la magasin.

Strengths:

  • You used sequencing (d’abord, après, ensuite, enfin) → ✅
  • You used past tense correctly (j’ai mangé, je suis allé, j’ai acheté) → ✅
  • Narrative is clear, chronological → ✅

Corrections:

  • mangé not mangè
  • déjeuner not dejeurner
  • après → needs accent
  • au café
  • du poulet (chicken), des légumes (vegetables, plural)
  • je suis rentré à la maison (not magasin → that means store)

Prompt 2:

What did you do last weekend? Mention at least one irregular verb (like avoir, être, faire, aller, voir).

le semaine deniere, je suis allè au cinema et vu un film.

Strengths:

  • Past tense narrative about last weekend → ✅
  • Used irregular verb (aller, voir) → ✅

Corrections:

  • La semaine dernière (not le semaine deniere)
  • je suis allé au cinéma et j’ai vu un film (need j’ai vu, not just vu)

Prompt 3:

Imagine a simple story: You woke up, did some activities, and went to sleep. Write 3–4 sentences in the past tense describing that day.

Hier, je me suis revillè, apres je me suis brossè les dents.
Ensuite j’ai mangè le pan avec eoufs pour le petit dejeurne.
Ensuite je suis allè au parc avec mon ami, nous avons couru.
enfin nous sommes allès au restaurante.

Strengths:

  • Used reflexive verb (je me suis réveillé, je me suis brossé) → ✅
  • Clear sequence of events with connectors (après, ensuite, enfin) → ✅
  • Mixed verbs: manger, aller, courir → ✅

Corrections:

  • réveillé not revillè
  • après (accent)
  • brossé not brossè
  • mangé not mangè
  • du pain avec des œufs (not pan avec eoufs)
  • déjeuner not dejeurne
  • nous avons couru = correct! 👍
  • au restaurant (not restaurante)
  • nous sommes allés (not allès)

🌟 Evaluation

  • You clearly used passé composé with regular + irregular verbs.
  • You included time markers (hier, la semaine dernière).
  • You used sequencing words (d’abord, après, ensuite, enfin).
  • Your stories are clear, chronological, and fit the level.

👉 Verdict: You pass Silver 1! 🎉
